IKO Shingle Reviews

General Roofing Systems Canada installs IKO Shingles throughout Canada. IKO Shingle Installations are completed in the following cities; Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Lloydminster, Saskatoon, Regina, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Canmore, Banff, Cranbrook, Kelowna, Vancouver, Whistler, Winnipeg, Toronto and points between. British Columbia. Alberta. Saskatchewan. Manitoba. Ontario.

Service. An advantage that GRS has in Western Canada for shingle installations are the markets we service. In Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Regina, IKO shingles remain well stocked and distribution is highly efficient. This is a key value for us in servicing our customers.

Due to the competent distribution, local support, and the exclusive IKO 15 Year ironclad portion of the Warranty Coverage that’s offered with the IKO Shingles, our crews would rate these shingles with a moderately high rating.

Quality. With respect to the quality of IKO shingles, the IKO line has a moderately high rating. Their line also exhibits a high level of diversity across specific use cases. Some examples are: High Wind Rated Shingles, Shake Looking Shingles, Luxury Shingles, Algae Resistant Shingles, Energy Efficient Shingles, Low Slope Shingles.

Colors/Profiles/Textures. Most IKO shingles are 100_0710available in a variety of colours. This happens to be a large selling feature with this brand. IKO shingles come in a neat and clean wrapper that is a result of the brand’s consistency with their manufacturing process. This is an important feature for this type of product as shingles need to be installed properly with the correct sizing. Should a shingle be misshapen due to a packaging error, this would affect the overall quality  of function for the shingle itself.

Shingle size consistency becomes really important if a DIY  Installation is being completed. You do not want to learn or attempt to do a shingle project by yourself with shingles that don’t fit together properly.

The textures of the  shingles, or the “Shake Look”, may or may not not suit a high end shingle purchaser. As soon as you get into the Luxury Shingles or shingles that cost the same as tile, then we would advise you to choose an alternative type. The top end of the shingle prices  becomes more of a process of comparisons amongst the selections and ultimately choosing what you prefer.

Here are our reviews broken down by specific IKO offerings. You can click the subheadings to open a new window for each product. Warranty coverage may also be found by following these links.

Marathon Ultra AR
Our crews regularly use this type as it is an economical 3 tab shingle that installs well and holds up well to the elements. Installation of 3 tab shingles take more skill in some respect. If you attempt to do this on your own, please search our blog for shingle installation guides.

Cambridge
IKO Cambridge shingles are another standard type for our installers. They are consistent with being one of the top performers in their class. The IKO Cambridge shingle is a mid to mid-high grade shingle that is perfect for standard installations. They are readily available and  available in a wide variety of colors. Cambridge shingles are made of  laminate, they are considered to be a designer shingle, and are covered under the IKO Limited lifetime warranty.

Royal Estate
We install IKO Royal Estate Shingles typically only on estate homes. The Royal Estate shingle is an excellent looking laminate shingle that has a traditional estate look. The Royal Estate shingle stacks up to any high end shingle offering on the market with the same slate look for a fraction of the price.

Grandeur (Discontinued)
IKO Grandeur Shingles are one IKO’s SBS Modified high quality shingle selection. This selection is considered to be one of the best due to  The technology used for the asphalt. If you need to install shingles in cold weather , the IKO Grandeur Shingle would be a wise choice on account of it easy installations despite mother natures elements. The only down-sides to theGrandeur IKO Shingles is the high cost and limited color selection, otherwise they are a great shingles and considered one of the best on the market in BC, Alberta and  Saskatchewan for 2011.

Armourshake
The IKO Armourshake Shingle is often over-looked by homeowners. However we really enjoy installing this particular type of  shingle. It is a high end shingle selection from IKO that stands up well against the competition. It has an original design that is often a high interest point with our customers as it adds a unique and elegant finish to your roof.

Now we would like to advise home owners to be aware of selecting high end shingles, as they are often unaware that they contain designs. So when you are completing your roofing project and have selected this particular shingle , you will need to take into account the design for the overall finished look. our specialists at GRS will  always suggest home owners to go with a rep and view different roof lines to get a better sense for the over all designs that are available.

Overall the IKO Armourshake is a great choice if you are aiming for a higher end shingle that has more of a textured pattern to it. the shingles themselves are more costly yet offer a great selection of colors.

Owens Corning Shingles Review

General Roofing Systems Canada installs Owens Corning shingles throughout Canada. Owens Corning shingles installed in Toronto, Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Lloydminster, Saskatoon, Regina, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Canmore, Banff, Kelowna, Vancouver, Whistler, and points between.

Owens Corning Shingles 2011 – Our Review in General

Owens Corning Shingles, by default, are a substantial and predictable manufacturer of shingles – Owens Corning is obviously a substantial company. However, in Canada, at least in Western Canada, Owens Corning hasn’t been represented until now, in a way that say IKO or BP shingles have. IKO has significant distribution roots in Western Canada being they are originally from the Calgary, AB area – so our confidence in a predictable representation in the IKO shingle is “very high”, and BP Shingles have been well represented through stores like Home Depot and traditional roofing suppliers for some time in Western Canada.

Owens Corning Shingles now have significant representation in Western Canada as of 2011, in that Lowes has them stocked on its shelves. Lowes stores have popped up all over Western Canada. This increases our comfort level with shingle style and colour availability, and warranty/service support locally in Western Canada.

Owens Corning Shingles have always performed well and are a predictable shingle product. In the same way that we would review the performance, quality, and choice of shingles in our IKO Shingle Reviews on this blog…. we encourage homeowners with specialized or specific requirements from their shingles to look at alternatives in the market also. The Owens lineup is wide and represents designer, luxury and algae resistant requirements, but specific to those and other particular needs we always encourage homeowners to look at alternatives to be sure the right choice of shingle is made. For example, if you are re-roofing a shake roof (be it cedar shake or a pine shake roof) and you are looking for a really nice looking shake shingle that is specific to your “preference” to replace your shake roof, then you want to look at the alternative shingles available in the higher price range to be sure your preference is met – luxury or specialty shingles, especially the true shake looking shingles with the right profiles, are a significant expense.

In summary, Owens Corning Shingles are a solid choice for homeowners that require a modest, mid, or mid-high shingle for their home. The higher end more costly shingles meet more scrutiny in the marketplace and choice of shingle becomes more specific to personal preference. Malarkey, GAF, etc. have high end offerings that should be considered as well. And now that stores like Lowes are carrying the Owens Corning Shingles in Western Canada, the representation, supply, types, and colors of shingles readily available will be predictable for homeowners.

Our Review of Owens Corning Berkshire Shingles

The Berkshire Shingle line are a high end shingle product; classic, elegant and showing great street appeal. This would be a competitive shingle offering to IKO’s Royal Estate Shingle that became available in 2011. Colour choice with shingles is limited, which is common at this level of quality. I believe there are five colours currently available. Owens Corning has a 10 Year “Tru Protection” period on their shingles (which would be similar to the 15 Year no grief protection IKO Shingles carry), and the Berkshire shingle has a Limited Lifetime Warranty coverage.

Our Review of Owens Corning Woodmoor Shingle

The Owens Corning Woodmoor Shingle Collection is for the shake to asphalt conversion market. The Woodmoor Shingle would be a similar shingle offering to the IKO Armourshake, the Certainteed Presidential TL, and others from shingle manufacturers like GAF and Malarkey.

Many of our clients in Alberta, in areas like Calgary and Edmonton, have a real shingle re-roof dilemma if they are re-roofing a Pine Shake roof. Short story is that not all Pine Shake roofs in Alberta performed as represented. The challenge these homeowners face is replacing a Pine Shake roof that has a thick profile and texture and getting that same look in an asphalt shingle. When they price out Cedar Shake costs or Pine Shake Costs quite often they look to this category of Shake Look-Alike Shingles. Then the price of the high profile shake looking shingles can become price prohibitive. We encourage homeowners in this category of shingle shopping to consider all options.

In high wind areas such as the open prairies it is also nice to consider a heavier shingle like the Shake Looking Shingles, and in areas like North Vancouver, Squamish, Whistler our clients consider the Shake Shingle Look of the Owens Corning Woodmoor and similar shingle offerings to be appropriate to the surroundings and provide excellent street appeal. We have even convinced areas with Architectural Controls for the roofing material being used to re-consider some of the shingle offerings that show a great shake look. Whistler for example has a Shake consideration in the Architectural Controls as does Fairmont, BC where we recently completed a Shake to Shake Looking Shingle Conversion in one of these areas.

Our Review of the Owens Corning WeatherGuard Shingle

The Owens Corning WeatherGuard Shingle is a true high performance shingle. Impact resistant (our clients in southern and central Alberta get a hail beating every year), HIGH WIND RATING IS 130 MPH, and we have many homeowners that constantly struggle with high wind areas and blow offs, etc. Coming home after a vacation to find your shingles blown off and a major leak and moisture in your home really is not fun. The Owens Corning WeatherGuard Shingle is one of the best in its class – hand down. This shingle is available in lots of colours, has great texture, it’s a good looking shingle, and it has a moderate price point.

Our Review of the Owens Corning Duration Shingles

The Duration Shingles from Owens Corning would be a similar offering to the IKO Cambridge Shingles, BP Harmony Shingles, etc. It is the standard laminate shingle offering in the mid range that most homeowners purchase. The price of the Owens Corning Duration shingles is competitive, the performance is competitive, and the shingle profile and texture Owens Corning Duration is a good looking laminate shingle. A great shingle product for the average homeowner in Western Canada.

Owens Corning Shingles – Oakridge Shingles

The Oakridge line of Owens Corning Shingles is a laminate similar to the Duration Shingles above but the entry step up from the 3 Tab Shingle offerings below.

Owens Corning Supreme Shingles

The Supreme Shingle offering from Owens Corning is the traditional 3 tab shingle. There are many colors available and they are inexpensive. The perform as well as any other offering on the market for 3 Tab shingles. Our only word of advice as it applies to a 3 Tab Shingle, be sure to know what you are doing before you start shingling. Learning how to shingle a 3 Tab shingle is different than the Laminate Shingle offerings above.

Re-Roofing Your Home | Be Sure to Inspect Your Attic First!

General Roofing Systems Canada provides re-roofing services throughout Canada. Toronto, Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Lloydminster, Saskatoon, Regina, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Canmore, Banff, Cranbrook, Kelowna, Vancouver, Whistler and points between.

Inspect your attic space before you start your residential re-roofing project.

Replace wood deck sheathing that is rotted or water damaged, analyze attic air exchange, and install attic air vents to be sure your attic is ventilating properly. Check for heat loss at the vapour barrier, be sure your insulation is doing the job, and replace plumbing boots, roof flashing, etc. as required while you are at it.

When replacing your residential sloped roof, it is critical to inspect your attic space first.

If you re-roof your home without inspecting the attic for roof rot, water damage, vapour barrier issues, heat loss to the attic, and proper air intake/exhaust, you are risking have to re-roof again in half the time or worse.

If this occurs, what was the real cost of your new roofing shingles?

Proper ventilation in your attic, building envelope heat loss, proper insulating, and other components of professional shingle re-roofing standards and procedures all play important factors in the process of a shingle roof replacement, and it greatly affects the length of time your new shingles will last.

The best roof shingles are shingles that are on the best roof system.

You can have the best shingles in the world and they will prematurely fail if your roofing system is deficient.

If you install a new shingle roof, and you do not check the attic space, you are SG1S1505really re-roofing shingles (or any other roofing material) with a lot of risk to your newly shingled system. Not to mention, most people decide to re-roof their home due to the fact that something is not right with their roof to begin with. We heard statements such as:

  • “The roof is leaking.”
  • “The roof is ice damming, and now snow or water backup is causing roof leaks.”
  • “The roof valleys are leaking.”
  • “Our shingles are just no good and they need to be replaced.”

The point is, there are many reasons roof shingles do not last as long as they should.

For example, if you have a vapour barrier issue (warm air from the inside of your home is entering the attic space) and the warm air entering your attic space is then causing ice damming on your roof, the ice damming then causes leaks (the ice or snow on the roof melts and freezes and melts and backs up under the shingles and then leaks into the attic, all because the underside of the roof sheathing is too warm due to heat loss into the attic). Moisture then causes roof rot to the sheathing which isn’t healthy. The ice backup on the roof damages the shingles and roof underlay, the moisture destroys your insulation, and the water leaking into your home can do all sorts of damage.

Before you re-roof your home and pay the cost for new shingles, you want to know if heat loss into your attic is occurring or your roof sheathing is rotten. If you do not do this before the new shingles are installed, you risk investing in new roofing and the roof rot not being uncovered and replaced, and the warm air coming in to your attic that now causes roof ice damming the following year and perhaps the roofers didn’t install ice and water properly or at all or metal to the roof valleys under the shingles or a host of other possibilities and now you have a brand new shingled roof that cost you an arm and a leg that is leaking with roof rot on the roof sheathing and you need another new roof! You see the possible problems? (Talk about a run on sentence!).

Ice and Water Membrane to Back and Sides of Roof Openings, Wall, StepFrom the same example, let’s say you do not do an assessment of the air ventilation and now you have a new shingle roof, AND your attic air intake is plugged at the soffits by insulation. On top of that, your roof vent exhaust isn’t working properly because you only have four duro-flo air vents at the ridge for a 2100 sq. ft. home/attic space. You’ve had leaking in your home due to condensation in the past and your roof system can’t breathe and your old shingles deteriorated prematurely with your last roof. By now you must be thinking “My roof or shingles only lasted 12 years, and the limited shingle warranty was for 30 years! What the heck?).

Well, news is that your new roof shingles will only last 12 years. Your new limited lifetime warranty on your shingles won’t cover the costs because your roof ventilation ratio is not right, your intake air is compromised because there is insulation covering the intake vents at the soffits, and the exhaust attic ridge vents can’t work properly either…. not to mention that your house is 80 years old and the vapour barrier is compromised and is letting warm air into your attic space, etc. etc. etc. Replacing shingles after having new shingles put on only 10 years earlier is not where you want to be (especially when the wife finds out that it wasn’t the roof shingles fault!). Anyway, sorry I am off track…

The lesson here is… your new shingles will last decades and decades and decades if the roof system and attic space is proper for the new roof shingles to perform properly (and you look like the wise leader of the home to boot!)

I think we all get the point here…

As of 2011, our new policies mandate that we cannot re-roof a home with shingles unless a thorough attic inspection is done prior.

The GRS Standard Re-Roofing Specifications and Pricing now allows for this service in the price we quote you for new shingles. It also allows for a venting analysis, new roof vents, plumbing boots, etc. in the cost of your new roof shingles. Movement of insulation away from the soffit areas is also in the cost of your new shingles, as well as replacement of deck sheathing up to 100 sq. ft. As long as you don’t have a major roof or attic space remediation issue requiring the services of a restoration expert, for the most part, the price you receive from GRS for re-roofing your shingles is the same price to also bring your attic space up to par so the system performs as it should.

Some examples of standard GRS shingle replacement specifications are:

Roof sheathing needs to be replaced if it is rotting (which is also a health risk) or has excessive water damage from ice damming back up – this is a Standard Specification in the GRS Shingle Re Roofing Cost and our shingle re roofing prices include up 100sq ft of roof sheathing replacement. Air ventilation calculations are required and an analyis of your attic ventilation is completed free of chaege, air vents are included in the new price of your shingles, inspection of the insulation and inspection of your vapour barrier is also included in the cost of your new shingles. Insulation replacement and vapour barrier replacement is not included in the price of your new shingles but the inspection is included and is complimentary.

Product Review: Malarkey Shingles

Malarkey Shingles are one of the top rated shingles on the market and tend to be a favorite for our roof installers for projects requiring replacements/ re-roofing. The malarkey shingle line up is considered to be one of the “best bought” as they are the most predictable shingles available for the 2011 roofing season.

Roof Conversions – Shake Roof Replacement

Shake roof replacement / re roofing decisions can be more complicated than shingle to shingle re roof decisions. For shake to shingle conversions of either Cedar shakes or Pine Shakes, the Malarkey Legacy shingle is one of the many options available. Although they are not as thick and they do not have the same shingle texture and profile that other shake to shingle replacement options offer, Such as Shingles from companies like Certainteed, IKO, and GAF.  The Malarkey Legacy shingle is an excellent SBS laminate shingle that demonstrates well in its category of shingle.

Malarkey Shingles

Malarkey Roofing Main Web Site: www.malarkeyroofing.com

Malarkey XL Review

The Malarkey Northwest XL Shingle is a respectable Asphalt Laminate Shingle. It is a 3M Scotchgard Algae Resistant Shingle. LOW SLOPE ROOFING – The Northwest specifications state that it can be installed onto slopes as low as 2:12 if you follow Malarkey underlay specifications for low slope roofing (pending upon your local building codes). The Malarkey Northwest is also a heavy shingle – a 4  bundle shingle that has a high tensile strength. Also, the Malarkey Northwest has the “Zone” technology that really assists with the application as the nailing zone is much larger than other conventional shingles. All in all, GRS installers recommend the Northwest Malarkey shingle when a strong, asphalt, laminate shingle is wanted.

Malarkey Legacy Review

Our overall review of the Malarkey SBS Rubber-Modified Asphalt Laminate Shingle states that it is often preferred by our installers. The SBS Modified Shingle component is an excellent selling feature of this shingle, not to mention the Zone nailing technology and the performance of the Malarkey Legacy.

The Malarkey Legacy shingle also has the 3M Scotchgard Algae Resistance and Malarkey allows Low Slope Roof installation to 2:12 as long as the Malarkey Shingle Installation Specification is followed.

Malarkey Highlander Review

The Highlander series are a asphalt laminate shingle which are considered by Malarkey as their “economical shingle”.  The cost savings of this shingle are the primary reason to not choose the Malarkey Legacy. It is important to note that the Malarkey Legacy is not an expensive shingle – but the Highlander shingle from Malarkey is most definitely a great cost effective choice if cost is the determining factor. The Malarkey Highlander would compete with shingles such as the IKO Cambridge laminate and the BP Harmony laminate shingle.

Malarkey ECOASIS Shingle Reviews – ECOASIS Premium AB Shingle (SBS Modified Shingle) and Malarkey ECOASIS Shingle (Asphalt Shingle):
Due to having never installed the Malarkey Solar Reflective shingle offerings named ECOASIS and ECOASIS Premium, due to the market being primarily based in the US, we are unable to provide an accurate and honest review. However,  GRS has great confidence in Malarkey shingles so we are very confident the ECOASIS shingle series is excellent.
Malarkey 3 Tab Shingle Reviews
In regards to reviewing the Malarkey 3 Tab Shingle offerings, there are not many comments to be mentioned as all the 3 tab products are of excellent quality with no conflicting qualities. We have not had many experiences with the Dura-Seal Malarkey (Fiberglass mat with Asphalt Shingle), yet we can say for certain that the Hurricane SBS Modified 3 Tab and the Malarkey Alaskan SBS Modified 3 Tab shingles are excellent choices.

IKO Crowne Slate Shingle Reviews

IKO Crowne Slate Shingles Score Big with Consumer Report Reviews
IKO Crowne Slate Shingle has one of the Top 5 – Best Rated  reviews on the Market for 2011

IKO Shingles - Crowne Slate Shingle Reviews
IKO Shingles

IKO Crowne Slate, Owens Corning Berkshire, and the Certainteed Grand Manor all rate in Top 5 in the Consumer Reports annual  reviews. The products that provide the most competition for the IKO Crowne Slate Shingle are: the GAF Grand Slate, the Certainteed Centennial Slate shingle, Certainteed Grand Manor, IKO Royal Estate and in some aspects the Owens Corning Berkshire shingle.

If you can get away from the classic estate look or the 3 tab classic estate look, we would recommend the Malarkey Legacy SBS Modified Shingle. however, in regards to the classic estate shingle reviews, here’s what we’ve discovered this year from the installers in the field  along with what the Consumers Reports has to say.

Roofer’s Review of IKO Shingles

The new IKO Royal Estate is an excellent shingle and consistently receives positive reviews from our installers.

The GAF Grand Slate , Certainteed Centennial Slate and the Owens Corning Berkshire shingle are all exceptional shingles. Yet what stands out this year in reviews from the installers is clearly the IKO Royal Estate Shingle and the IKO Crown Slate Shingle.

Hands down these two shingles are being reviewed by our  replacement installers as the best shingles available for 2011 (classic style or estate profile shingles). This is also agreed upon by Consumer Reports. Our installers most specifically like the no hassle 15 year front end warranty on the IKO Shingles and the SBS Modified Component of shingle such as the IKO Crowne Slate. The GAF Grand Slate is asphalt (a respectable shingle), but not an SBS Modified Shingle like the Crowne Slate or Grandeur Shingle from IKO.

Consumers Reports Rates / Reviews Shingles

The latest available Consumers report has the following reviews available for shingles:

The Certainteed Grand Manor Shingle, Owens Corning Berkshire Shingle, and the IKO Crowne Slate Shingle all rate in the top 5 Shingles Reviewed with  review ratings of 87, 87, 86 respectively.

In the opinion of our shinglers installing the new IKO Royal Estate shingle, they feel  the Royal Estate shingle would receive a high rating as well, yet it was not included in the reviews.

Also missing from the reviews were the Malarkey Legacy shingles. This particular shingle is also a favorite amongst our installers.

So when considering the classic look shingle this year, give the SBS Modified IKO Crowne Slate a look (which is a bold looking shingle) or the IKO Royal Estate shingle, and if you would like to stray away from the classic look, take a look at the Malarkey Legacy SBS Modified shingle.

GAF Timberline Shingles

The GAF Timberline Shingles are one of the best out on the market for 2011. They consistently receive rave reviews from installers, and are on par with other competitors on the market.

When it comes to finding a shingle that looks like “shake”, it can pose to be quite a challenge. However with the Ultra HD from GAF Timberline, this shingle alone is an excellent choice when trying to replace cedar or pine shakes.

The GAF Timberline ArmorShield Impact Resistant Shingle is the best on the market when you are trying to diminish any concerns you may have regarding hail damage.

Now if you are looking for a more economical  shingle that also delivers excellent quality, then the product to  choose would be the GAF Timberline Natural Shadow Shingles.
